One of the aspects on which it is necessary to pay attention when sizing a filter press is the need to carry out laboratory tests on a sample sludge in order to determine its filterability.
The filterability tests are performed using a laboratory pilot filter press in order to simulate the operation of the industrial machine.
This system makes it possible to study and verify any chemical-physical treatments necessary to improve the filterability of the sludge, highlighting the most significant data for the selection of the method with the highest yield.
The data obtained from filtration tests, with or without chemical additives, allow an optimal dimensioning of the machine necessary for the dehydration of the quantity of sludge to be disposed of, with the relative identification of the times and materials necessary for the specific problem.
This test, which can also be performed on a small quantity of sludge, is in fact very useful if one thinks of the translation of the filter press on an industrial scale.
It is therefore very important to carry out this test to understand the trend of the fundamental parameters in order not to mistake the size of the machine, the number and type of both plates and cloths installed.
This therefore saves us time and money as errors and attempts are minimized in the operational phase.
In fact, when the filtration tests are not carried out and the machines are dimensioned relying on the data on paper, often the desired results are not obtained.
This happens both because the real characteristics of the sludge are often never the ones assumed, and because the best way to treat the sludge is not always known based solely on experience.
It is therefore advisable, whenever possible, to carry out these laboratory tests, also because the cost of the test is negligible if compared both to the final price of the machine and to the benefits that can be obtained by having this important additional information.
Depending on the types of sludge to be tested, the pilot filter press can be simple or can include all the devices and options that are also present in industrial filter presses.
