THE HYDRAULIC UNIT OF THE FILTER PRESS

One of the secrets to evaluate a high-quality filter press is to take a look at how the hydraulic unit is made.

We will therefore analyse the operation of the hydraulic power plant for a filter press.

This part is fundamental as it is the apparatus that controls the opening and closing of the hydraulic cylinder which keeps the entire system under pressure during the filtration phase.

There are a number of options – which in truth optional they should not be – which a performing and safe filter press cannot afford to have in their hydraulic power plant.

LEVEL SWITCH AND THERMOSTAT

First of all, to preserve the functioning and life of the hydraulic power unit, it is good that there are two components which in few cases are mounted but which would be essential to safeguard the life of the power unit itself: I am talking about the level switch and the thermostat.

These two control devices signal if there are any anomalies, or if, for example, the oil temperature is too high and I could have overheating problems, and again the level switch signals an anomaly if for some reason there are oil leaks and the level drops below the minimum threshold

These control functions are very important, because they allow us to intervene before it’s too late, since ruining a hydraulic pump is instantaneous, and in doing so the machine remains stationary.

Surely, they make the control unit more expensive, but in the face of the great benefits they can bring, it is a little sense speculation.

In fact, guaranteeing the functioning of the hydraulic unit for a filter press is in fact a thing of vital importance.

HEAT EXCHANGER

If we then go to install the machine in a warm place, it is also advisable to install a heat exchanger that helps us keep the temperature of the control unit under control.

Another thing to consider for a hydraulic power plant are the safety devices that are often not found in all machines:

the first are the safety straps, while the second is the pressure relief valve.

SAFETY STRAPS

The safety straps are those devices whose task is precisely to anchor themselves firmly to the hydraulic pipes in the event of an explosion and avoid the whipping of these components which could be lethal, remember that the pressurized oil of a central filter press ranges from 250 to 350 bars.

OVERPRESSURE VALVE

The overpressure valve, on the other hand, is always a safety valve which, however, must be installed in the bottom of the hydraulic cylinder.

This is used to prevent any overpressures that may occur during the filtration phase from dangerously increasing the pressure inside the cylinder: in fact, this valve discharges the excess pressure into the tank, avoiding structural problems in the cylinder.

These 4 precautions that are not commonly installed in many filter presses are however very useful both as regards the intrinsic safety of the machine and the safety of people or things in the event of an unexpected event.
